Celebrating Value and Talent: Building a workforce where every ability shines

Every October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) highlights the important contributions people with disabilities make to our workforce and challenges us to consider what becomes possible when workplaces recognize ability, remove barriers and welcome individuals with different strengths and perspectives.

This year’s theme, “Celebrating Value and Talent,” reflects what we see every day at STARability Foundation: People with autism and other developmental disabilities bring valuable skills and contributions to our workplaces and communities. When given opportunities and support, they can grow professionally, become independent and contribute to the economic growth of our community.

Meaningful employment is about much more than earning an income. It provides purpose, structure, confidence and connection. Yet many people with developmental disabilities continue to face barriers when seeking work, from traditional interview practices that may not allow them to fully demonstrate their abilities to employers who may lack the resources or experience to build an inclusive workplace.

Removing these barriers benefits not only job seekers but also the businesses that recognize and invest in their talents. Inclusive hiring can help employers strengthen retention, improve productivity and build a more dependable and diverse workforce. Employees with disabilities often excel in attendance, punctuality, job tenure and adherence to policies and procedures.

For more than four decades, STARability has been shining a light on all abilities, ensuring people with autism and other developmental disabilities are seen, heard and valued. Our Career Services team helps participants, lovingly referred to as STARs, identify their strengths and interests, prepare for interviews, gain hands-on experience and connect with employers who believe in their abilities. Onsite job coaching and continued guidance help employees succeed while giving employers resources and support along the way.

We’ve been able to successfully find job employment for our STARs in the automotive, hospitality and recreational sectors, to name a few.

Creating a more inclusive workforce requires working on both sides of the employment equation, helping STARs build skills and pursue opportunities while giving employers the tools, training and confidence to embrace diversity.

But inclusive employment doesn’t end with a job offer. Employers must also be equipped to create environments where people of all abilities feel welcomed, supported and valued. STARability recently partnered with Naples Zoo to provide Disability Inclusion Training focused on disability awareness, person-first language, accessibility, universal design and supportive workplace practices.

Workforce readiness also means developing effective communication, confidence and interpersonal skills that help individuals succeed in professional and everyday settings. Through our partnership with The Naples Players, STARability offers weekly Improv & Musical Theater classes led by Craig Price, the theater’s award-winning director of community education and wellness. Interactive exercises encourage creativity while strengthening communication, social skills and confidence that can carry into the workplace and throughout daily life.

True inclusion is not passive; it requires action. It asks each of us to examine how we recruit, how we hire, how we prepare our workplaces and how we support every employee’s success.

This October, I invite local businesses to celebrate the value and talent of people with disabilities by creating meaningful opportunities. Offer a workplace tour. Host a vocational training experience. Participate in inclusion training. Explore supported employment. And recognize the strengths that individuals of all abilities can bring to your organization.

Together, we can build a workforce where talent is recognized, opportunity is accessible and every STAR has the chance to shine.
