The Junior Trailblazer Academy is an after-school program that offers enriching opportunities to students 14-21 with developmental and intellectual disabilities who attend Collier County high schools. This program provides educational opportunities to achieve independent living and employment readiness skills. Jr. Trailblazers was developed under the guidance of the STARability’s Trailblazer Academy, a full-time, daily program for individuals who have aged out of school services.

STARability Foundation is a 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization that has been providing quality programs for individuals with developmental disabilities in Southwest Florida for more than 35 years. In 2016 the Trailblazer Academy program was created to fill a gap in post-high school services. This program provides community-based opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities through vocational training, employment readiness and life skills education. We are thrilled to be able to take this successful model and adapt it to the transitioning students as an after-school program that supplements public school education programs, through a partnership with City of Naples Parks and Recreation.

Community Collaboration

The Junior Trailblazer Academy is located at River Park Community Center and meets after school when public school is in session. A pilot summer camp component is currently underway in conjunction with River Park’s summer camp program. STARability’s Trailblazer Academy’s Program Director and Instructors lead the Jr. Trailblazers.

The objective of Jr. Trailblazers is to introduce vocational skills and opportunities, emphasize fitness and nutrition, and practice independent living skills. The participants will explore different interests, and discover likes and dislikes in vocational training and life activities. They will also work on soft skills inherent in employment and independence, such as teamwork, organization, communication, customer service, listening skills, taking directions, and developing positive work ethics and motivation.

In addition to the Jr. Trailblazers curriculum at River Park, participants also travel to vocational sites and outings in the community. Transportation is provided.
