STARability Foundation has come a long way from our roots in 1983, when about a dozen parents formed a nonprofit organization known for many years as the Foundation for the Developmentally Disabled (FDD). Today, we offer programs that focus on vocational training, continuing education, teamwork, social engagement and community involvement.
2016
We launched the Trailblazer Academy to meet the needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who, at 22, age out of school and face a gap in services. The Trailblazer Academy quickly became our centerpiece program because of its focus on community engagement, vocational training and continuing education.
2017
The Junior Trailblazer Academy was started to serve teenagers with developmental and intellectual disabilities who are enrolled in high school and preparing to transition to young adulthood.
2018
Our name changed to the STARability Foundation to reflect our focus on what people with disabilities can do, not what they can’t do.
2019
STAR Store: Upscale Resale & Stellar Art opened to support our mission through the sale of donated furniture, décor and other home goods. The store is also a vocational site, where participants make candles and other products in the STAR*Made Studio.
2020
The COVID-19 pandemic forced us to suspend in-person programming. We quickly shifted our program delivery to virtual platforms so our STAR participants could continue learning and engaging with their community. Virtual programs became a permanent part our curriculum so participants could take classes and enjoy activities online and face-to-face when we resumed in-person programming.
