STAR Staff Attend 2018 FLASHA Convention and Meet Prominent ASD Author and Spokesperson, Temple Grandin

In an effort to support the professionalism of our staff, STARability sent several of our staff members to the 2018 FLASHA (Florida Association of Speech-Language Pathologists & Audiologists) Convention. The Convention included a keynote speaker, Dr. Temple Grandin, a prominent author and speaker on ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). Dr. Temple’s keynote address gave a valuable “insider” overview of ASD, as well as supporting research on the topic.

The STARability staff learned numerous essential techniques and guided research from the conference, which included insight for individuals with ASD on time management, building a professional portfolio, everyday activities to improve social abilities, along with Temple’s personal look at Autism and Aspergers. STARability’s Trailblazer Academy, Program Director, Madison McNally found that the conference, “brought together so many different, and important areas of behavioral research which can help us when developing programs and lessons for the Trailblazer Academy.” She adds, “I am excited to take many of the lessons and tools I gained from this professional event and implement them into our program’s everyday activities.”

The conference produced various ideas and perspectives on ASD, and the majority demonstrated the importance of focusing on what individuals with developmental disabilities can do, not what they can’t do. Madison believes that “hearing from Dr. Grandin and having her demonstrate through her life and career that she, an individual with an Autism, can be successful professionally is an important message to all our members. It was wonderful to see so many people, from professional researchers to family members of individuals with autism, gaining a new perspective on the capabilities of those with developmental disabilities.”
